Have you ever been in Sitges or Barcelona in October, and noticed all of the wild mushrooms in the produce stores? If you have been here, you know what I’m talking about, a plethora of different type of mushrooms, big and small. In Sitges the produce store on Calle Rusinol always has a great selection, or the farmers market above Mercadona. In Barcelona the best place to go is BOLETS PETRAS in La Boqueria, their selection is imense and some say that this stall is the mecca for all that want to know about Bolets (wild mushrooms).
Every October through til December, a weekend past time for many Catalans is wild mushroom picking. Throughout Catalunya one can go up into the hills with his/her wicker basket and find some true delights. However, picker beware, although there are 2000 species of mushrooms in Spain, only 175 types can be safely eaten, and each year half a dozen or so die from not knowing the correct species. Most of the die-hard BOLETEAIRES (mushroom pickers) go as far into the hills as the Pyrenees mountains, whereas we a Sitges Holiday Accommodation prefer somewhere a little closer ie. Montseny or the Penedes region.
If you’re here on vacation and want to go on a guided tour the sitges tourism office will be able to point you in the right direction for a professional guide.
