This Saturday you can get your first taste of the new snow season. A showcase for the main ski stations of Catalonia, Spain and Europe, the Tast de Neu ski fair is setting up shop opposite Illa Diagonal, between Carrer Numància and Carrer Entença. ( check googlemaps for an idea where it is )

There’s even a Mobile ski ramp!!!

What is more, the La Molina ski resort, which is hosting the 2011 World Snowboard Championships in January, will be installing a mobile ramp where visitors can try out skiing equipment and professional riders will be demonstrating their skills. Top brands like Nordica, Salomon, Atomic, Eider and K2 will be showing off their latest products there too.

This ramp will be doing the rounds of the city in the run-up to the snowboard championships, which take place between 15 and 22 January with an opening ceremony at the Palau Sant Jordi in Barcelona.

The ski fair will also see the presentations of the two mascots for the world championships, Moli and Lina. The fair has been organised by the Associació Catalana d’Estacions d’Esquí i Activitats de Muntanya and the Agència Catalana de Turisme, in collaboration with the Barcelona City Council.

Eat the Mediterranean diet and live longer!!

Barcelona‘s Mayor expresses his satisfaction at the Mediterranean diet’s recognition as part of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity and announces the Fundació Dieta Mediterrània is henceforth to have its headquarters in one of the pavilions on the historic site of the Hospital de Sant Pau

"From now on, the world will know a lot more about the Mediterranean diet and its values", said the Mayor of Barcelona, Jordi Hereu, speaking at the Mercat de la Llibertat in the district of Gràcia, where he went to announce his satisfaction at the Unesco decision to recognize the Mediterranean diet and include it in the list of humanity’s Intangible Cultural Heritage.

He added that Mediterranean-diet values "are expressed in the municipal markets", a diet that also drives "one of the most important economic sectors in our country".

He then pointed out how this recognition had been possible thanks to the "alliance between Spain, Italy, Greece and Morocco, who have been working on this bid for two years".

For her part, Catalan Minister of Health, Marina Geli, emphasized how the Mediterranean diet helps to "prevent diseases of the circulatory system and certain types of cancer, like digestive cancers", although the diet "did experience a decline a few years ago".

New headquarters for the Mediterranean Diet Foundation at the Hospital de Sant Pau

Taking advantage of the occasion, the Mayor also announced the new headquarters for the Fundació Dieta Mediterrània, the organisation behind the UNESCO bid, will be in one of the Hospital de Sant Pau’s pavilions, close to the new United Nations University, on the historic Sant Pau site.

"We are talking about a November 2010 watershed. Barcelona is the capital of the Mediterranean diet and aims to champion its capital status," said the chairman of the foundation, Lluís Serra.

The Fundació Dieta Mediterrània was set up in 1996 to promote research into the Mediterranean diet along with its health-related, historical, cultural and culinary aspects.

It also aims to publicize the results of its research, to promote the Mediterranean diet, especially among the young.
